Features

The Bio Interface Unit, Institute of Innovation Research, allows researchers from different fields in Japan and overseas to carry out cutting-edge medical and health research and development as a group in order to create science and technology that realizes a prosperous and comfortable super-aging society.

We have built a flexible organizational structure as a research unit, and have formed a medical and health research center unique to science and engineering, which Tokyo Institute of Technology is proud of in the world. We will study the mechanism by which information emitted by the brain moves the body, and develop practical technology for moving machines and devices using brain waves. In addition, we will develop technology to detect the status of various organs such as the liver and kidneys, which will lead to early detection of diseases and promotion of health.

For both the brain and internal organs, we will develop a biointerface that controls devices based on biological signals collected using sensors that detect non-invasively from outside the living body. It will be used not only for supporting the elderly and people with physical disabilities, but also for a wide range of purposes such as developing equipment for maintaining the health of healthy people in their daily lives.

We will provide the opportunity to use the 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment that we own as a shared facility so that it can be used efficiently and safely by many users who need it.

Overview and Agenda

In addition to making more effective use of research equipment, researchers will have a wider range of choices for measurement and evaluation methods, expanding the scope of experimental research and increasing the possibility of efficiently leading to higher-level research results.

In addition, it can be expected that it will be very effective for researchers in different fields who do not have equipment and facilities in this field to use this shared system when they want to develop their research results and ideas. Similarly, this shared system can greatly contribute to the early start-up of research by newly appointed young researchers and researchers who newly start research at this university through joint research both inside and outside Japan. In this way, expectations are high from the perspective of promoting interdisciplinary fusion and developing human resources for researchers.

By managing and operating the equipment in an integrated manner, the space utilization efficiency can be improved, and by efficiently performing maintenance, the cost reduction effect can be expected. Furthermore, it is very important to ensure higher safety by systematically implementing safety education as a whole.

As mentioned above, there are many expected merits, but in order to fully realize them, it is necessary to properly establish an integrated management and operation system. This is a place that has been promoted with the start of the equipment sharing promotion group, but there is still room for improvement, and further enhancement of these is an issue for the future.

In addition, in order to maintain and develop such operations independently in the future, it is important for more users to use them, and for that purpose, we can enhance the provision of information and increase the benefits of users. We will continue our efforts.
